Helping Them Get to College and Beyond

Throughout the year, the WriteGirl College Access Program hosts a series of college entrance workshops for our teens to help them with everything from their personal statements and financial aid forms to choosing a college that suits their needs and interests. We have a dedicated team of dozens of volunteers who meet with our teens one-on-one to help them every step of the way, even if that means 11pm phone calls to help them meet a midnight deadline.
Our Class of 2024 students have been accepted to schools that include Yale, Brown, University of Chicago, Harvard, Spelman College, USC and the University of California (Irvine, Los Angeles, San Diego, Davis). Let us introduce you to a few of our alums in college who credit WriteGirl for helping them on their college path.

"WriteGirl gave me the needed confidence to put what I had to say out into the world. They've provided me with the skills that have opened up a majority of the doors to opportunities I have now. From being a three-time finalist in the LA Youth Poet Laureate competition, to now being a freshman at UC Berkeley – the love and care that WriteGirl poured into me changed my life and truly set me up for the future."
Rhiann
Cal State Long Beach
Junior Year
Majoring in Creative Writing, minoring in Journalism and Theatre Arts
"This year, my poetry was accepted and published in the Exposition Review’s 2024 issue. I was one of two WriteGirls to read aloud at an event hosted in a bookshop in Culver City. I was also able to be one of the poets that opened the Festival of Books at USC, which was an incredible experience. And this year, for the first time, I was a finalist in the LA Youth Poet Laureate competition. WriteGirl has allowed me to expand my confidence in writing this year and really allowed me to express my creativity in the ways I'm most proud of."

"WriteGirl has always supported my dreams – writing several recommendations to schools and providing mentors to hone my writing skills. I can't imagine my writing journey without them: the workshops and mentorship have made me a more confident writer and communicator. I now volunteer as an editor and win competitions in my spare time. The conscious effort to involve the international members of the community is amazing - I got my friend in and she has a mentor now! There is just so much a person can do when they have the right support, and WriteGirl has been that for me."
Samantha
University of Notre Dame
Incoming Freshman in 2025
Finance Major
"WriteGirl helped me prepare for the QuestBridge National College Match application! By revisiting sentences I wrote in my journal during past WriteGirl workshops, I enhanced my creative side and brought fresh ideas to my application. Not only did these workshops provide a space for inspiration, but they also helped me reduce stress during the fast-paced application process. I am deeply grateful for WriteGirl because it has improved my creativity, imagination and compassion for others. Additionally, the WriteGirl College Meet-Up session helped me get constructive feedback from writers who can easily spot grammatical errors and provided insights at times when my school counselor was busy assisting other students.
Thank you, WriteGirl, for being part of my college application journey and showing amazing students they can also receive a full-ride scholarship to their dream university!"

"WriteGirl's Soapbox and supportive writing environment were the catalysts that helped me come out of my shell as a more confident, outspoken person. I would not have earned or chosen to accept the nearly full-tuition scholarship at Kalamazoo College without the support and encouragement of the WriteGirl College Access Program. I recently graduated from Kalamazoo this past November! I couldn't have done it without WriteGirl."
