WriteGirl Alum Performs at The 2024 Paris Cultural Olympiad

WriteGirl alum Shandela Contreras was recently selected as one of the Los Angeles Poet Delegates for the 2024 Paris Cultural Olympiad Sport + Poetry Games!
This prestigious event took place on the eve of the closing ceremonies of the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics. Shandela and the other poets were featured in a dynamic 12-hour "poetry-relay" program, which showcased a mix of live poetry readings, spoken word, and musical performances by a variety of artists based in France.
Shandela took the stage just after Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo! The poets were assigned a 15-minute time block to perform their pieces, which were translated into French for the event, and live-streamed worldwide to create a poetic marathon. The "mic/baton" was then ceremoniously passed back to Los Angeles at midnight Paris time, with a subsequent poetry reading event titled “Catch the Mic” held at the Mark Taper Auditorium in the Los Angeles Public Library. During this week-long visit, Shandela and the rest of the Los Angeles poets enjoyed an all-inclusive itinerary that included book signings, performances and attending Paralympics events.
We are so proud of Shandela!
