WriteGirl was excited to welcome our teens and mentors to an in-person WriteGirl Poetry Workshop at The Autry Museum of the American West on Saturday, April 13, 2024.

We kicked off the event in the theater with some fun writing experiments and a special video message from celebrity poet Rupi Kaur. We then welcomed special guests Sholeh Wolpé (poet), Sofía Aguilar (WriteGirl alum and poet) and Masiela Lusha (poet and actress) to perform poetry onstage accompanied by the beats of percussionist Emilia Borja.

Mentor/mentee pairs then explored the museum, using the art and history featured in the exhibits to inspire their poetry. The event culminated in a WriteGirl “Poetry Cafe” where nearly a dozen teens shared their poetry on a stage adorned with flickering candles, twinkly lights and an audience of teens, mentors, parents and WriteGirl supporters.

WriteGirl Alum Shandela Contreras and WriteGirl Board Member Andy Allo closed out the event with powerful spoken word performances.

Thank you to all of of our volunteers and supporters who made the event a success!

We love these quotes from our teens after the workshop:

  • “I loved that this workshop helped me see things from different perspectives.” - A WriteGirl teen

  • “I loved the vibrancy and beautiful vulnerability in all the poems.” - A WriteGirl teen

  • “I loved learning and connecting with my mentor and fellow mentee.” - A WriteGirl teen
